Rasnov
Rasnov fortress was built on the southern hill rising from the centre of the place dating from the XIVth century. The troops of Mihai Viteazul also found shelter in between the fortress’s walls as they stopped here after the defeat from Miraslau (1600). Its dimensions show that this was a refuge fortress of peasant type such as the ones built in the same period by the Transylvanian Saxon communities from Saschis and Prejmer.
Located on the old-tradition road of Brasov - Rucar - Campulung Muscel joining Transylvania of Tara Romaneasca, the fortress faced a lot of fires; Rasnov fortress is one of the best conserved peasant fortresses from Transylvania, even if Tara Barsei was threatened and strongly affected by the Turkish attacks of the XIV-XV centuries.
Rasnov county is mentioned for the first time in 1331 and in The Middle Ages and in The Modern Period was among the 12 villages forming Brasov district, mentioned in documents in 1377. The location is placed on the commercial road joining Transylvania of Tara Romaneasca through Bran passage, insuring an early economic development.
The location was first of all a transit commercial centre ever since 1427, with the right to organize a weekly fair awarded by King Sigismund of Luxemburg and which kept its importance of Brasov’s neighbourhood the most important commercial centre from the south Transylvania in its relations with the South East Europe.
