Here Erupted One of the Last Volcanoes on Romanian Territory

Few places in the country show you, in a single walk, how the earth beneath your feet was built. On the edge of the village of Racoș, in Brașov County, a hill in the Perșani Mountains hides three geological phenomena that go hand in hand: an extinct volcano, a wall of basalt columns, and a lake of an unreal green. Together they form the Racoș Geological Complex, a protected area spread over roughly 95.2 hectares. The eruptions that shaped this place are among the last basaltic volcanic events on Romanian territory, occurring millions of years ago — which is why geologists and teachers bring entire groups here as if to an open-air museum.

The Extinct Volcano and the Scorched Earth Beneath Hegheș Hill

A former volcanic slag quarry, the section cut into the volcano reveals an impressive profile, about 200 metres long and over 50 metres high, in which you can read the layers of basalt, pumice, and reddish slag. In places the soil has a reddish-brown colour, a sign of the burning of long ago, and the cone stands out from a distance. This is exactly the kind of landscape that makes you understand, without complicated explanations, what an eruption means.

The Basalt Columns, an Organ of Stone

A few hundred metres further on rises the star of the site: a wall of basalt columns about 6–8 metres tall, arranged like tubes glued one against another. Their regular shapes — polygonal, pentagonal or quadrilateral in cross-section — are not the work of man but the result of the slow cooling of the lava: as the hot mass contracted, it cracked into orderly vertical fissures. The effect strikingly resembles the pipes of a giant organ, and daylight shifts their shades from grey to brown.

The Emerald Lake, the Quarry Turned Jewel

The most photographed sight, however, is the lake. It formed in a former basalt quarry, abandoned around the year 2000, which gradually filled from rainfall, snowmelt, and springs. The water, clear and nearly 18–20 metres deep, takes on a spectacular turquoise-green colour, hence the name Emerald. The view is superb, but take care: bathing is forbidden, and the steep banks call for caution.

How to Get There and What Is Good to Know

Racoș lies in the north of Brașov County, about 70 kilometres from the city of Brașov; from the E60 European road coming from Sighișoara you turn right at Rupea Gară, and then there are about 10 more kilometres to the village. For guests from the Râșnov–Bran area, the complex is a full-day trip that combines nicely with a visit to the Sükösd-Bethlen Castle in Racoș. The terrain is unimproved in places, so comfortable hiking shoes are recommended. Being a protected area, respect the trails and leave no trace behind you. Check the schedule and fees on the official source before your visit.
