The sentinel of Brașov, rising between two valleys

Locals have long called it the "sentinel of Brașov", and the nickname suits it: the Postăvaru Massif rises about 12 kilometres south of the city, wedged between the Ghimbășel Valley and the Timiș Valley, like a stone sentry above Țara Bârsei. Its highest peak, also known as Cristianul Mare, reaches 1,799 metres. It lies a short distance from Râșnov, by way of the Poiana Brașov resort, which nestles right at its foot.

A story written in limestone and conglomerate

Postăvaru is a mountain that shows its age in the rock. It is made up largely of Jurassic limestone and Mesozoic conglomerate, stone shaped over millennia by both glaciers and water. That is why its relief blends glacial forms with karst forms — sharp ridges, cliffs and caves carved into the limestone. The massif is divided into several subunits, from the main body, with Cristianul Mare, to the gentler plateau of the Poiana Brașov Mountains.

The Postăvaru Chalet and the cable car

The landmark of the massif is the Postăvaru Chalet, at around 1,604 metres, right below the peak. Those who would rather not walk up can take the cable car from Poiana Brașov to the Cristianul Mare area, from where the Drumul Roșu (Red Trail) descends to the chalet in about twenty minutes, and the marked path then continues on to the peak. In winter the slopes become the ski area of Poiana Brașov, while in summer the same runs turn into hiking trails. Check the schedule and prices on the official source before your visit.

A panorama like an atlas of the Carpathians

The effort of the climb is rewarded on the summit plateau. On a clear day, the view takes in the ridges of the Bucegi to the south, the jagged wall of Piatra Craiului, the Făgăraș Mountains, Perșani and Măgura Codlei to the west, and Piatra Mare and Ciucaș to the east. Below, Brașov and the villages of Țara Bârsei look like a model set in the palm of your hand.

Forest, wildlife and a protected corner

The foot of the mountain is clad in beech forests, while spruce and fir appear higher up. The forests shelter brown bear, lynx, wolf and chamois, alongside other protected species; part of the massif, together with Tâmpa and Stejerișul Mare, belongs to a nature reserve. Numerous marked trails link the mountain to Brașov, to Râșnov and to the surrounding villages.
