Râșnov
At the foot of the mountains of Țara Bârsei, Râșnov carries its peasant citadel atop a rock, between Bran and Brașov. A well hewn into stone, caves, gorges and a dinosaur park make it an ideal base for exploring Transylvania.

A town best admired from above, from atop a rock
Few settlements in Transylvania reveal themselves at a single glance the way Râșnov does. From the limestone hill east of the town, the peasant citadel has watched over the red roofs and the plain of Țara Bârsei for nearly seven centuries, with mountains rising all around. Here, in the heart of this corner of Transylvania, lies the base of the MAX International hub: a gateway town from which Bran and Brașov remain within easy reach.
Between Bran and Brașov, in Țara Bârsei
Râșnov is part of Brașov County and lies less than 20 kilometres from the city of Brașov, a short distance from Bran, at the foot of the mountains that enclose Țara Bârsei. Once known by its Saxon name Rosenau and its Hungarian name Barcarozsnyó, the town grew up along an old passage through the Carpathians. For a visitor setting out from Râșnov, the surroundings can be explored comfortably on short one-day hikes.
The refuge citadel that withstood the centuries
The first documentary mention of the peasant citadel dates from 1335, linked to a Tatar invasion. Built as a place of refuge, the citadel sheltered the inhabitants in times of danger, with stores of grain and provisions enough to withstand a siege. Over time it repelled several attacks, and tradition holds that it was captured only once, in 1612, by Gabriel Báthory, and even then not through battle but for want of water.
The legend of the well hewn into stone
It was precisely this weakness that gave rise to the citadel's best-known feature: a deep well, dug straight into the rock between 1623 and 1640, nearly seventeen years of toil. Legend tells of two Turkish prisoners who were said to have been promised their freedom in exchange for the work. Whether historical truth or local tale, the well became the symbolic heart of the citadel and the guides' favourite subject.
Beyond the walls: caves, dinosaurs and gorges
Râșnov is not limited to its citadel. A few kilometres from the town, the Valea Cetății Cave, discovered in 1949 and opened to the public in 2011, impresses with its spacious chambers. Dino Parc gathers over one hundred and twenty life-size dinosaur replicas, especially suited to families, while the Râșnoava Gorges draw hikers. A cable car links the town to the citadel hill, and in the centre a medieval Evangelical church is preserved. Check the schedule and prices on the official source before your visit.
