A cathedral that took its name from a fire

Few people know that the Black Church was never originally called that. The church was built and dedicated to Saint Mary (Marienkirche), and the nickname that has stuck to this day was born of a tragedy: the great fire of 21 April 1689, which consumed a large part of Brașov. The flames and smoke blackened its massive walls, and the town simply began to call it "the black church". The name only entered official documents towards the end of the 19th century, but the image of its scorched walls has remained tied to the monument's identity.

Almost a century of construction

Building this Gothic cathedral was the work of generations. Construction began around 1383, on the site of an older church destroyed during the Tatar invasion of 1241, and was interrupted by the Ottoman campaigns, being completed only in 1477. About 89 metres long, it is regarded as the largest Gothic place of worship in south-eastern Europe. The tower that dominates the square rises to about 65 metres, having watched over the rooftops of Brașov's old centre for centuries.

The organ, the bell and the oriental rugs

The interior holds a few treasures that make the visit memorable. The monumental organ, built between 1836 and 1839 by the Berlin master Carl August Buchholz, has nearly 4,000 pipes and remains a prized instrument, still heard in concerts today. In the tower hangs a bronze bell of about 6 tonnes, one of the largest swinging bells in Romania. Perhaps the most unexpected treasure, however, is the collection of oriental rugs, especially Anatolian ones, brought by the Saxon merchants who traded with the Ottoman Empire between the 15th and 18th centuries; it is one of the most important collections of its kind in Europe, displayed right inside the church.

The Reformation and the statue of Honterus

The Black Church is closely tied to the history of the Reformation in Transylvania. In front of it, on the southern side, the statue of Johannes Honterus was erected in 1898 — the humanist and reformer who shaped the spiritual and cultural life of Brașov's Saxon community. Today the church belongs to the Evangelical community and remains, at the same time, a living place of worship and a cultural landmark of the town.

Good to know before your visit

The Black Church stands in the heart of Brașov's old town, a short distance from Râșnov, making it a perfect fit for a day of exploring the area starting near MAX International. Visiting hours, any organ concerts and ticket prices may change depending on the season and church services, so check the schedule and prices on the official source before your visit.
