The fortress never conquered in battle
Built on Fortress Hill, above Râșnov, the fortress withstood sieges for centuries. The only time it fell — in 1612, before Prince Gabriel Báthory — it was not through combat, but because the attackers found and cut off the hidden spring that supplied it with water. From that lesson was born the best-known story of the place.
A fortress of the community, not of a lord
First mentioned in documents in 1335, when it withstood a Tatar attack, Râșnov Fortress was a peasant refuge stronghold: here the community of Saxons and Romanians from Râșnov sheltered with their families and provisions in times of trouble. Unlike noble castles, inside there was no residence, but a small town of survival — two courtyards, houses with an upper floor, a school for the continuity of community life, and a chapel raised in 1650, on the highest point. The walls, up to about 1.5 m thick and roughly 5 m high, were raised and reinforced over time by the locals themselves.
The well and its legend
The heart of the fortress is the well, about 146 metres deep, dug between 1623 and 1640 — seventeen years, longer than it took to build parts of the fortress. Legend says that two Turkish prisoners were promised their freedom if they reached water; they are said to have dug for years, and in the end their fate remained shrouded in rumour. The well was in use until around 1850.
What you see today
You can walk through the two courtyards and the narrow lanes between the restored houses, see the legendary well, and take in one of the most beautiful panoramas over Râșnov, over Țara Bârsei and, on a clear day, towards the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului. A small museum presents the life of the fortress and of the community.
How to get there
The fortress stands right above the centre of Râșnov, a few minutes from MAX International. You climb up on foot along the lane or take the inclined-plane lift from town. Opening hours and prices may change seasonally — check them before your visit on the fortress's official channels.
