The longest limestone ridge in Romania

Few places in the Carpathians make you lift your head as much as Piatra Craiului. The massif rises like a thin, sharp wall of white limestone, a continuous ridge running from north-east to south-west, considered the longest and highest limestone ridge in the country. Its highest point is Vârful La Om, also called Piscul Baciului, which reaches 2,238 metres. Seen from afar, from the roads between Râșnov and Zărnești, its jagged silhouette seems cut with a knife out of the rest of the landscape.

A mountain made of stone and abysses

Almost the entire massif is made of limestone, a rock in which water has carved spectacular shapes over the millennia: gorges, chimneys, ledges and caves. The ridge stretches for about 25 kilometres, with narrow sections where the path runs right along the edge, between steep slopes. Here too are some of the deepest shafts in Romania, and the great scree slopes at the foot of the walls show how alive the rock remains under the action of frost and water.

The carnation that grows only here

The most treasured inhabitant of the massif is not an animal but a flower: the Piatra Craiului carnation (Dianthus callizonus), an endemic species that grows nowhere else on the globe but on these limestone walls. It has become the symbol of the mountain and blooms in high summer. Alongside it, on the rocks, you can spot the edelweiss and dozens of species of wild orchids. The massif's rich flora numbers over a thousand species of higher plants, a significant part of Romania's entire flora.

Wilderness protected since 1990

To preserve this treasure, the Piatra Craiului National Park was established here in 1990. The mountains shelter the large carnivores of the Carpathians — the brown bear, the wolf and the lynx — as well as the chamois, which climbs the most exposed ledges. That is precisely why a good part of the park is a strictly protected area, and visitors are asked to stay on the marked trails.

The gateways to the massif, a short step from Râșnov

The best-known entrance to the mountains is the Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor, a narrow, shady gorge with walls over 200 metres high, through which you can walk easily, suitable even for families. From here the paths set off towards Cabana Curmătura, towards Piatra Mică and towards the ridge itself. Zărnești and the Plaiul Foii area, the main departure points, lie a short distance from Râșnov, which makes the massif easy to reach on a day trip.

Worth remembering before you set off

The ridge routes are long, exposed and require experience, good equipment and stable weather; the Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor and Piatra Mică remain the accessible options for beginners. As a protected area, access, camping and movement follow the park's rules, which may change with the season.
