Current status (checked 12 October 2026)
The castle has no opening hours. The building with towers is the home of the Ugrai family, who own it, and can be visited only on request, by prior appointment, according to the Castle in Transylvania Coalition (information read on 18 July 2026). The Haller manor next door operates as a school. An undated German castle database notes that the ensemble can be seen only from the outside.
Two buildings called Haller
In Hoghiz, Olthévíz in Hungarian, the Haller name covers two neighbouring historic monuments. The Haller-Kálnoky Castle (monument code BV-II-m-B-11716) is a Renaissance building with a polygonal plan and two towers; oral tradition says it was built on the ruins of a former monastery. The Haller manor (BV-II-m-B-11717) is a smaller noble house, built, according to historians, in the 16th century and brought to its present size in the 19th century.
Bethlen Kata and the Haller family
In 1716 the estate became the property of Countess Bethlen Kata (1700–1759), for whom Hoghiz became her favourite place in the following decades. After her death, the estate passed to the Haller family. The Ugrai family bought the castle between the two world wars. The manor was returned in 2009 to Haller László, who sold it to the local authorities.
