Bisericuța Păgânilor: the lesser-known trail in the forests of Râșnov

Bisericuța Păgânilor is one of the places that separate the authentic Râșnov from the classic list of sights. There is no building here: it is a group of rounded conglomerate rocks, hidden in the forest on Postăvaru, above Râșnoavei Cave. It is also called the Temple of the Idols, and the name comes from legend. Its value lies in its discretion: forest, quiet and the feeling of discovery.

Access and difficulty

The level depends on the route you choose — and that is where the confusion comes from.

The short route, from Râșnoavei Cave

The official route, marking 05MN56, starts at Râșnoavei Cave and is classed as easy: 0.9 km, about 15 minutes, with 65 metres of ascent. The route sheet.

The long version, from the centre of Râșnov

From town, the route is 5.2 km and takes about an hour and a half, and the level becomes medium. This is where the steeper sections appear, and where the markings are uneven.

Whichever version you choose, we recommend trainers or hiking boots, checking the weather, and avoiding the trail after heavy rain or when visibility is poor. The good season is spring to autumn; winter calls for proper equipment. There are no technically risky sections.

Who it suits

It suits active couples, photographers, visitors used to mountain paths, and guests who want a less crowded Râșnov. We do not recommend it for people with reduced mobility, families with very small children, or those looking only for a flat, fully laid-out walk — for them, the short trails near the complex are the better choice.

The nuance matters, though: on the short version the demands are far gentler — 0.9 km of forest path, with no technical sections.

Part of the hidden Râșnov

Bisericuța Păgânilor connects naturally to Râșnoavei Cave and the Cumidava Roman Fort — places with real value, but which call for context and caution. Together they form a Râșnov deeper than the usual tourist route.

The MAX recommendation

For hidden trails, check the starting point, the state of the path and the markings before you set off. After a day of exploring, MAX International is the base for a meal, rest and relaxation.
