Cumidava: what is left of a Roman fort

The Cumidava Roman Fort is one of the most important quiet historical landmarks near Râșnov. It is not a spectacular tourist sight, but an archaeological site valuable to anyone who wants to understand the real layers of the area: Roman, medieval, Saxon and mountain.

What the Cumidava Fort is

One important thing, so you do not arrive with the wrong expectations: Cumidava is an archaeological site at ground level, not a reconstructed monument with tall columns and imposing walls. Its value comes from context, location and historical significance — it was a Roman fort guarding the roads in the area. For history enthusiasts, it is an authentic window into the Roman past of Transylvania.

Where the name comes from and what it guarded

The fort was built by the Romans to defend the northern border of Roman Dacia, on what is now the territory of Râșnov. The name, Cumidava, comes from an old Dacian settlement in the area — so the place was inhabited before the Romans built their fortification. It is one of the traces of the Roman presence in the Țara Bârsei region, long before the medieval fortress on the hill.

Getting there and how long to stay

The site is about 5 km from the complex, roughly 15 minutes away. It is not set up for tourists and access is difficult, so wear footwear suited to rough ground and don't count on signposts. Once there, you need 30–45 minutes to walk around it.

It makes most sense together with Râșnov Fortress: the Roman fort and the medieval fortress show two eras in which the same corner of the country was guarded, more than a thousand years apart.

Who the visit is worth for

It suits those who appreciate historical context: families with older children interested in learning, culturally inclined couples, and guests who want to see the less-promoted side of Râșnov. It is not the right stop if you only want quick spectacular photographs — its value is documentary and educational, not visual.

Part of the lesser-known Râșnov

Cumidava shows that Râșnov is not only a weekend destination, but a place with historical depth. It combines well with other quiet landmarks in the area — Bisericuța Păgânilor, Râșnoavei Cave or the Sissi Promenade — for a Râșnov deeper than the classic tourist route of the Fortress and Dino Parc.
